Bull (Rene, c. 1870-1942). 'Shocking', pencil and watercolour, signed in white ink to lower left corner, titled and additionally inscribed 'To A. R. Taylor with all best wishes from René Bull' to lower margin, image size 305 x 205 mm (12 x 8 ins), mounted on card, with period label of A. E. Johnson, Artist's Agent to verso René Bull was born in Dublin, and encouraged to take up art by the French Illustrator Caran d'Ache. He became well-known through his comic 'inventions' which were published in The Sketch between 1895 and 1918, anticipating the work of William Heath Robinson. He was a founder member of the London Sketch Club. (1)
