Item Overview

Description

Catherine Ryan makes detailed abstract cityscapes using objects collected from daily life. These found and donated items tell a story when meshed together through the primal medium of paint. Titles are formed from snippets of advertising text used in the work, for example the convenience slogan “For the Way We Live Today” casts an eye on 21st century life in Ireland. Mobile phone parts and a piece of decommissioned passport also play with the concept of national identity, reflecting its layered and complex nature. Her technique evolved from influences including a background in glass design (shiny objects), a love of painting, sculpture, street art and the readymade. Recent studies in Folklore also ties in with the everyday ephemera and symbolism.Catherine is a professional member of Visual Artists Ireland. She has exhibited widely in Ireland including the RHA and RUA RED, and in group shows in the UK, France and the USA. ''In Bits (For the Way We Live Today) is part of a series of 4 original paintings, one of which was recently sold at RACHT Exhibition curated by HERMAN'S auction house, December 2023. In Bits (For the Way We Live Today) was previously exhibited in London in Lubomirov-Angus Hughes Gallery.
