To his cousin Gertrude Bowen (née Chamberlain) advising he had turned down "a very high honour" stating "The verdict that so cut short my public career came very unexpectedly - and indeed I did not at first realise its significance. But now I know I can''t do the work and have accepted what is inevitable without bitterness. Least you should think I have been unduly neglected, I will tell you in confidence that I was offered a very high honour indeed, but I refused it. "Mr Chamberlain" was good enough for my father and its good enough for me I want no consolation prizes except such letters as yours", another, signed, dated 28th May 1940.
