More About this Item

Description

1807 - 1886) American diplomat and author, son of John Quincy Adams, helped settle the "Alabama" claims. Good content A.L.S. signed in full, 1p. 8vo. with transmittal envelope, Boston, Feb. 18, 1879 to a lady in Brooklyn. In part: "...I have now been absent from Great Britain eleven years and during that period have been so drawn away from English politics that I fear I cannot enlighten you about the ''famous cypher in English Diplomacy''. All I know is that in the seven years I spent there, there was no mystification...". Toned a bit at center, else very good. Matted with a portrait and set into a shadowbox frame. "Cyber mystification" refers to the belief that some European diplomatic correspondence was written in code.
