CATALOGUE NOTE
A similar rocky outpost and lighthouse to those in the former of the pair also appear in an earlier painting by Lacroix de Marseille, dated 1759, in the Palazzo Ducale, Colorno (Parma) (reproduced in L. Salerno, I pittori di vedute in Italia (1580-1830), Rome 1991, p. 154, fig. 42.4). The capriccio view of Tivoli with the Temple of Vesta and waterfall is very close indeed to two other paintings by Lacroix de Marseille, both signed and dated 1774, the first sold as part of a pair in New York, Sotheby's, 30 January 1998, lot 246, and the other (also sold as part of a pair) in London, Sotheby's, 8 December 1993, lot 16. The present pair of painted ovals pre-date both these interpretations by some years and, whilst maintaining a very similar mise-en-scène in all three works, Lacroix de Marseille has introduced significant changes to the figures.
