Chris Burden created two groups of fifteen drawings (in 1989 and 1982) called collectively "Devil Drawings." Paul Shimmel, in his essay for the 1988 Chris Burden exhibition quotes Burden in his description of these works: Like most of Burden's work in the 1980s "Devil Drawings" in both format and subject matter explore "the origin of power both physical and bureaucratic and how this power ultimately shapes the world in which we exist."
