Description: COLLECTIBLE CLIPPED SIGNATURE & Sentiment From ALS 1 1/2 high X 5 inch wide ALS bottom Of Noted American Senator John Sherman. Approximately 1 1/2 inch high by 5 inch wide ALS bottom signed by noted American Ohio Senator John Sherman. Boldly signed in ink: "YOUR VERY TRULY/JOHN SHERMAN"

"John Sherman (1823-1900) was an American Republican House and Senate member senator from Ohio during the Civil War and into the late nineteenth century. He also served as both Secretary Of The Treasury and Secretary Of State. Sherman sought the Republican presidential nomination three times, coming closest in 1888, but was never chosen by the party. His brothers included famed Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman, Charles Sherman, & Hoyt Sherman. As a senator, he was a leader in financial matters, helping to redesign the United States’ monetary system to meet the needs of financing the civil war. After the war, he worked to produce legislation that would restore the nation's credit abroad and produce a stable, gold-backed at home. Serving as Secretary of the Treasury in the Hayes administration, Sherman continued his efforts for financial stability and solvency, overseeing an end to wartime inflationary measures and a return to gold-backed money. He returned to the Senate after his term expired, serving there for a further sixteen years. During that time he continued his work on financial legislation, and the regulation of interstate commerce. Sherman was the principal author of the Sherman Antitrust Act Of 1890 for which he is best remembered. The Act was simple, stating that "[e]very contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several States, or with foreign nations, is declared to be illegal". The bill further prescribed criminal penalties for any person who monopolizes trade. In debate, Sherman praised the effects of corporations on developing industry and railroads and asserted the right for people to form corporations, so long as they were "not in any sense a monopoly"."
