Notes

Extraordinary painting of a lonely plant, a perfect example of Westerik's subtle imaginations, both in subject and in colour. A 'new realist'*, Westerik presents a tenderly painted plant, clearly left to its fate, with the equally unspoken and unmistakable threat of what is hanging over him. Thus the plant becomes a being that moves us, and whose defencelessness compels the viewer to come and rescue him.
*a term coined by Wim Beeren in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague in 1964 when he presented Westerik's work together with that of Hockney, Bacon and others
