Description: COLLECTION OF FOUR 18TH CENTURY MARK CATESBY/GEORGE EDWARDS ENGRAVINGS OF BIRDS, GERMAN EDITION. Nuremberg, Johann Joseph Fleishman, 1749-1753. Four matted, of the period handcolored engravings by Johann Michael Seligmann after Mark Catesby and George Edwards. From Seligmann's Sammlung Verschiedner Auslandisher und Seltener Vogel, Collection of Diverse, Foreign and Rare Birds.

Consisting of Tab. XVI: Mefange au Croupion Jaune (#49557.1), Tab. IV: Les Preneur de Mouches huppe (#49555.1), Tab. V: The little Pie-Grieche (#49549.1) and Tab. XII, Prenour de Mouches Rouge (#49556.1). All measuring 15 5/8" high x 9 5/8" wide.

'The Catesby plates are slightly reduced versions of the etchings appearing in Catesby's own Natural History of the Carolinas, Florida and Bahama Islands, first published in England between 1731-43. Based on first hand observation in the wild Catesby's work was the earliest volume with handcolored plates which focused on American birds. The plastes after George Edwards are slightly enlarged versions of the etchings appearing in his A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, published from 1743-51. In personal life, Edwards and Catesby were friends. Edwards published the second edition of Catesbys' work in 1754.'
Condition Report: Toning to all and areas of foxing, not impacting plate.

Notes: From the Collection of The Old Print Gallery, Washington, DC.
