The four "Colloquia", multiple-language guides to conversation, have their basis on a format established by Noel de Barlaimont in 1576. Moving beyond a conventional lexicon (although a simple word list forms the latter portion), the Colloquia are formed into themed sections including table talk, trading, letter writing and direction seeking, thereby reflecting the multilingual needs of a rapidly expanding world of trade and commerce that formed the backdrop to these works.
