Description

CORNEILLE - RIETVELD, Gerrit (Dutch 1988 - 1964). Red Blue Chair, 1923/1954. Original painted and stained beechwood/plywood armchair; backrest, seat and two supporting bars marked with three small cuts on the side. Designed by Gerrit Rietveld and manufactured in the studio of Van de Groenekan with the original dimensions, assembled in Paris by a local carpenter in 1954 on request of Corneille; back fixed with 4 steel angle brackets (as usual for the copies from this period). With a postcard inscribed by Corneille: "Stoel van Rietveld. 1918 De zoon van Gerrit Rietveld gaf mij een exemplaar van zijn vader. Jan Rietveld architect kwam ermee naar Parijs en gaf mij deze historische stoel als verjaardagskado in 1954 - 20, rue Santeuil waar ik mijn atelier had. In Parijs door een franse timmerman in elkaar gezet - zonder spijkers of schroeven. Corneille/23 maart 2002". Some minor imperfections, but in very good condition.

Notes

Captivating association copy. Corneille received this chair in 1954 as a birthday present from the architect Jan Rietveld, who brought his father's armchair to Paris in separate parts. According to specialist Jurjen Creman the chair must have been brought in three parts, namely the two panels and the already assembled undercarriage. The construction of the bars and the paintwork clearly show the hand of Van de Groenekan. This means the Parisian carpenter only mounted the seat and the back exactly the same way as his Dutch colleague did. The chair is an early and completely original example of the chairs produced from 1955 onwards, so largely before Van de Groenekan became the official licensee of the chair. This also explains the absence of labels or stamps. As Corneille received the chair in the rue Santeuil we can be sure of the year 1954, because he left this address at the end of the year. Very nice copy of this iconic masterpiece and one of the earliest within reach. Moreover, this chair not only connects two of Holland's best known artists, but at the same time it shows Rietveld recognised Corneille just before his first international success in 1955.
