DALI, Salvador (Spanish 1904 – 1989) - after.

The Mae West lips sofa was first designed by Salvador Dali between 1937 and 1938, in collaboration with the poet and surrealist patron Edward James, for the refurbishing of the latter's West Dean home in Sussex. There are six early copies of the sofa, three different pairs. The sofa offered here is from a later edition (second half of the 20th century) and the only copy with this coating. Dali's love for her was already portrayed in his 1934-35 painting of 'The Face of Mae West, which might be used as an apartment' at the Chicago Institute of Art, in which her lips are depicted as a sofa. Although the sofa is usually upholstered with red fabric to represent the lips, Molenaar personally chose the fabric and design for the upholstery. Characteristic of his style as a couturier was his use of piping, usually in contrasting colours. Unique
