DAME LUCIE RIE (BRITISH 1902-1995), A FINE CONICAL MATT TURQUOISE AND BLUE BOWL, MID 1960S
on circular foot, impressed LR seal
REFERENCE Lucie Rie was born in Vienna, where she studied under Michael Powolny and with the eminent designer, Josef Hoffmann. She arrived in England in 1938 and established her Albion Mews Pottery Studio in London, in which she worked until her death. Her work is characterised as 'urbane' and the forms are thrown in an exact manner rather than spontaneous. She used a wide range of colours that were different from her British contemporaries and her rich glazes were used in conjunction with simple lines and refined, almost austere designs. She brought to British ceramics a highly developed understanding of modernism.
