Notes

Johan Dijkstra was one of the founders and most important painters of the artists expressionist association 'De Ploeg'. Dijkstra's early paintings from the 1920s show a clear influence by Van Gogh: he used bright colours and brisk brush strokes and depicted landscapes and farmer's life, like harvest and sowing scenes. Van Gogh on his turn was strongly inspired by 19th century artist Jean-François Millet, who paid hommage to rural life in his realistic way. Dijkstra combined the subject and the experimental brush stroke, thus creating a whole new view on the Groningen countryside.
