Description

EIFFEL, Gustave (1832-1923). Tour en Fer de 300 Mètres de Hauteur destinée a l'Exposition de 1889. Paris: E. Capiomont & V. Renault, 1885.

8o (241 x 155 mm). Frontispiece, two plates (one folding) and diagrams in the text. (Some spotting, particularly to early and last leaves). Original blue-grey printed wrappers (spotted).

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY EIFFEL on the front wrapper: "Hommage de l'auteur G.E." Eiffel's first publication on the Eiffel Tower, giving detailed descriptions of the proposed methods of construction, including engineering problems to be overcome, and anticipating the public's response to such a prominent landmark. Built as the triumphal entrance arch for the Paris Exposition of 1889 with a permit for only 20 years, the original design took into account ease of disassembly. However the Eiffel Tower remained the world's tallest building well beyond its expected demolishment date in 1909, until 1930 when it was surpassed in height by New York's Chrysler Building.
