More About this Item

Description

This painting depicts a covered bridge on a farmstead with cows grazing in front. Sloan was noted for his paintings of American landscapes. The ultimate tribute to Sloane's insight and artistic ability in creating his wonderful skyscapes is his specially- commissioned mural in the National Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian. The mural was no minor feat for an artist in his 71st year. Measuring seven stories high and half a city block long, Sloane completed the mural in less than two months. Eric Sloane was born in New York. As a child, he was a neighbor of noted sign painter and type designer Frederick W. Goudy. Sloane studied art and lettering with Goudy. While he attended the Art Students League of New York, he changed his name because George Luks and John French Sloan suggested that young students should paint under an assumed name so that early inferior works would not be attached to them. He took the name Eric from the middle letters of America and Sloane from his mentor's name.
