Notes
The drawing shows a young man, in what seems like a very stable studio pose: he is seated on a bench, supporting himself with one hand, while reaching back and up to grasp a handle with the other. The contrast between the carefully drawn armor and the sketchiness of the rest of the figure is striking. It led the authors of the Cleveland exhibition catalogue (loc. cit.) to suggest that this might be a very early study for the Portrait of Francesco Maria II delle Rovere, now in the Uffizi, Barocci's only portrait of a man in armor.
