Fei Danxu (Chinese, 1801-1850), a corresponding pair of paintings, "Two Sisters Floating in a Stream Beneath a Willow", ink and color on paper, signed and sealed upper right, and "Two Sisters Studying in an Outdoor Pavilion, Beneath a Paulownia", ink and color on paper, signed and sealed upper left, bearing an inscription on silk border, middle left, relating the story of how the two paintings were matched to create a "pair", each 37 in. x 7 1/2 in., framed and glazed. Note: The oval faces, slanting eyes, and tiny mouths of these slender and delicate beauties are characteristic of the female ideal as conceived by Fei Danxu, the famous Qing-dynasty figure painter. Fei was considered the inheritor of the tradition established by the Ming master Tang Yin (1470-1523).
