More About this Item

Description: 12 June 1855 LISBOA. 1 Acçao de Esc.100$00. black. No 2298. Folds. Large format. This Lisbon textile spinning company was formed 1838, in a former convent in the Alcantara district of Lisbon. In 1846/7 it built a very large factory (shown on the certificate) in the Santo Amaro area of the city. In the 19th century this was one of the largest industrial companies in Lisbon, and a major feature in the industrialisation of the city. The company enjoyed very high reputation and financial standing until about 1910, when it started to have difficulties. The crisis of 1917 brought the dissolution of the company and the sale of its premises. The face of the certificate shows dividend payments every year from 1855 to 1901. Also vignettes of a man reading and a woman spinning. Extremely rare.
