MAZEPPA AMONG THE HORSES oil on panel 33 1/2 by 29 1/2 in. 85.1 by 74.9 cm. Signed on the verso "painted by T.K. Van Zandt," dated "1832" in the original frame. Thomas Kirby Van Zandt was a life long resident of Albany, New York. His specialty was animal painting. The subject of the present painting "Mazeppa" is based on a poem by Lord Byron in 1819. The Van Zandt version of this composition relates closely to the 1826 painting of Mazeppa by Horace Vernet engraved J. Bannister.
