More About this Item

Description

FROST, ROBERT. (1874-1963). American poet and four-time Pulitzer Prizewinner, author of such beloved poems as “The Road Not Taken,” “Mending Wall” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” AMsS. (“Robert Frost”). 1p. 4to. N.p., N.d. To “Miss Parson’s Room.” A fair copy of his most beloved poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.”

“Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though.
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep-
And miles to go before I sleep.

Robert Frost

For Miss Parson’s Room”

Although born and raised in San Francisco, Frost had a deep association with New England, living and writing variously in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. After spending three years in England, where he befriended such authors as Ezra Pound and Edward Thomas, he returned to New Hampshire where, from 1915 to 1920, he lived with his family on a farm in Franconia. It was for his 1923 volume entitled New Hampshire that he won one of his four Pulitzer Prizes and which contained perhaps his most beloved poem, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.”

Matted. Some show through in the lower margin from traces of mounting on the verso. Very rare – in 50 years, we can recall seeing only two other fair copies of this great poem available for sale. [artsandsciences]
