PROVENANCE

Sir Thomas Lawrence (L.2445)

NOTE

This newly discovered drawing by Parmigianino was previously only known through the etching and aquatint by Rosaspina (fig. 1), which was published by Popham in his section devoted to Parmigianino's lost drawings known from old reproductions (see A.E. Popham, Drawings by Parmigianino, New Haven and London 1971, vol. I, p. 249, no.26, reproduced vol. II, plate 199). Popham believed that the Rosaspina etching was after an original drawing probably from Parmigianino's Roman period. David Ekserdjian has kindly confirmed Popham's suggestion of the dating but he does not know of any related commission.
