Mario di Giampaolo and Professor David Ekserdjian have both confirmed the attribution to Parmigianino. The drawing was made in preparation for the central section of Parmigianino's Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, now in the Louvre (M. di Giampaolo and E. Fadda, Parmigianino, Catalogo Completo dei Dipinti, Santarcangelo di Romagna, 2003, no. 30). Mario di Giampaolo dates both drawing and painting to Parmigianino's time in Bologna, circa 1529.
Mario di Giampaolo, who recently published the drawing, compares its style to that of The Madonna and Child in the Uffizi dateable to 1527-9 (M. Di Giampaolo, Parmigianino e il fascino di Parma, exhib. cat., Florence, Uffizi, 2003, no. 40) and to another of the same subject at Chatsworth, also drawn in red chalk (A. E. Popham, Catalogue of the Drawings of Parmigianino, New Haven and London, 1971, I, p. 213, no. 740, pl. 227).
