Description

A MAN GATHERING FRUIT, A WOMAN SUCKLING A CHILD AND A RIVER GOD with inscription "Giulio Romano" "(verso," laid down); pen and brown ink, brown wash, indented, the corners cut 186 x 192 mm. PROVENANCE P. H. Lankrink (L. 2090) An 18th or early 19th Century English sale, lot 1231, the entry glued to the mount Sir Thomas Philipps, according to an inscription on the mount "from Sir Tho Phillipps' Related to one of the square stucchi compartments on the ceiling of the Sala degli Stucchi in the Palazzo del Te, Mantua. A study for this composition, of comparable dimensions with this drawing, was in the Ellesmere collection, Sotheby's, 5 Dec. 1972, lot 40. The stylus indentations on the present drawings imply that a copy of this was taken by or for Giulio.
