The engraving of God appearing to Noah is based on Raphael's composition for the frescoes on the vault of the Stanza d'Eliodoro in the Vatican, completed in 1513, and intended to compete with Michaelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, completed the previous year. The Transfiguration continued this rivalry as it was painted in direct competition to The Raising of Lazarus by Michelangelo's protegé Sebastiano del Piombo, now in the National Gallery, London.
