More About this Item

Description

This scarce celestial map is from Christian Friedrich Goldbach's Neuester Himmels-Atlas. The work was published by Goldbach in 1803. It included views of the hemispheres with originally hand-coloring as well as star maps printed in black to appears as the night sky. The first edition was printed in 1799, but this publication used the original plates.

This celestial atlas was based upon the Bode-Flamsteed atlas. It was able to depict 7651 more stars than its predecessor however, rendering 10,570 stars. Each map used a Sanson-Flamsteed projection with a geocentric orientation.

"Although Goldbach's atlas was not the first showing white stars against a dark background - Semler, for instance, had used this technique in 1733 - it was the first of this kind to catch the eye of the Paris astronomical establishment. Lalande noted that the mtheod succeeded very well; Montucla praised its resemblence to a clear night sky." (Warner)

“The print style and technique was unusual. White stars are shown against a black background. The first pressing was made before the constellation figures and text details were added. These prints looked like a night sky. Then the finished plate was printed once more, providing a comparison with figures. The copper plates were printed in relief rather than the more common intaglio. While not the first to use this technique, his atlas was very influential on those that followed. His maps represent the stars with a Flamsteed projection.” (Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering & Technology)
