More About this Item

Description: 1 January 1884 COPENHAGEN. 1 Share of 180 Kroner=£10=F250. Serie B. blue. No 33289. Some paper missing from left border (2x2,5cm). Also heavy central fold and (edge-)tears, all repaired with (old-style) tape. Text in English, Danish and French. Formed Copenhagen 1869. It was set up as a merger of three recently established telegraph companies initiated by the great Danish industrialist Carl Frederik Tietgen. The aim of the firm was to create a worldwide telegraph company. It had a monopoly on undersea cables between the Scandinavian countries and UK to the west and Russia to the east, giving a link between these two countries also. It used this base to expand to a telegraphic system from UK and France to Japan, China and Hong-Kong. The company had a difficult time in the depression of the 1930s, followed by the German occupation of Denmark in World War II. The late 1950s/early 1960s brought a major expansion through Iceland and Greenland to Canada. However, the world was changing, and the company changed from a simple telegraph company to one with a range of telephone and other communications and business activities. It is still that today. Vignette of cities (London and Peking), leaves and a portrait of the company founder. Extremely rare.
