This fine engraved map is from Jermiah Greenleaf's
A New Universal Atlas. The work was published in Brattleboro, Vermont in 1842.
Greenleaf's
Universal Atlas was a continuation and expansion of David Burr's atlas of 1835. Burr was the official topographer for the U.S. Post Office Department. He sold the rights to his
Atlas in 1839.
This
Atlas was of note for its inclusion of a map of the Republic of Texas, the Oregon Territory (the earliest American atlas to incorporate the territory), the map of Wisconsin and Iowa, and the Territory of Florida.
