Notes

In 1907 Yamaguchi took over the management of the Fujiya Hotel in Miyanoshita in the town of Hakone, Japan. The hotel (near hot springs) catered to overseas guests and they often had questions about various Japanese festivals, customs and daily habits of the people. Initially Yamaguchi tried to deal with this by printing questions and answers on the back of hotel menus. As the questions proliferated he had to start printing more menu cards to fit all the answers and the staff were handing out stacks of them to the travellers. Eventually the situation got so out of hand that he decided to reprint all the backs of the menus, with additional information, into a book that he could hand out instead. He did this in December of 1934 and demand was so great that five months later he produced this second printing. And because everything had to fit on the back of menus, most of the subjects covered here are complete on one page.
