Description: Hercule au repos (?) en bronze à patine brune.
Le héros est assis sur un rocher, la jambe droite
posée sur la gauche ; il frotte son épaule gauche
à l''aide d''un instrument tenu dans la main droite
tandis que son autre main, prenant appui sur le
rocher, semble se saisir d''un linge. Levant son
visage sur sa droite, il imprime à son buste une
torsion faisant saillir sa musculature puissante.

Posé sur un socle en bronze
On ne connaît pas d''autres exemplaires de cette
intéressante statuette dont le sujet reste diffile à
identifir. Admiratif de la statuaire antique, l''artiste
s''est visiblement inspiré du célèbre Torse du
Belvédère pour réaliser cette fiure d''homme nu.
Il reprend en efft la torsion de ce buste d''athlète
d''époque romaine qui nous est parvenu sans ses
bras et ses jambes (fi. a et b). Mentionnée dans la
collection du cardinal Colonna entre 1432 et 1435,
cette statue a été très tôt estimée par les artistes qui
en fient dès le début du XVIe siècle de nombreux
dessins. Le peintre et graveur du nord de l''Italie,
Giovanni Antonio da Brescia (actif entre 1490
et 1535), la montre ainsi sur une gravure avec les
jambes restaurées (fi. c). Cet Hercule (?) est donc à
replacer dans la première période de la production
de petits bronzes de la Renaissance italienne
reproduisant plus ou moins fièlement des
modèles antiques ou s''en inspirant comme ici.
