Description: Elite Limoges Porcelain Partial Dinner Service, Retailed for Higgins & Seiter New York, comprising ten plates (diameter 9 1/2 inches); twelve bowls (diameter 9 1/8 inches, one with chip on base rim, and one with chip and hole); ten lunch plates (diameter 8 5/8 inches); six bread plates (one with rim chip); six dessert plates (diameter 7 1/2 inches); three fruit bowls; three cups and four saucers (two saucers with rim chips); a gravy boat; a round serving platter (diameter 12 1/4 inches); an oval serving bowl (length 10 inches, chip at base rim); an oval serving platter (length 11 1/4 inches); and a large platter (length 21 inches), each piece with a gilt molded beaded rim, leaf and floral swag banding and gilt molded corner scroll volutes (59). It is our privilege to present to you this rare beautiful antique partial set from Limoges pattern commissioned by Higgins and Seiter, who were one of the highest end French, English & German imported china wholesaler and retailer in the United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. New York City, was home to the showroom, located at 52 & 54 West 22nd St. Founded in the mid 1860’s, a partnership was formed in 1887 including Colonel Seiter (7th Regiment) Barton B & Arthur Higgins. Beginning with imported china, which was unique, as every pattern showcased was a Higgins & Seiter exclusive Contract design! By 1892, Higgins & Seiter advertisements were also featuring fine quality cut lead crystal ware. Incorporated in 1906. Col Seiter passed on Oct 19, 1910, and this began a downward trend, including an abortive move in 1913 to 9 East 37th Street, until their closing in 1915 after being in business for over fifty years. During a 20 year span ca. 1885-1905, Higgins & Seiter operated a very successful shop in that poor & downtrodden town of Newport, Rhode Island! Because one of their main selling points was exclusivity, each of these retailer-bespoke patterns was produced in very limited amounts. Also, the high society clientele of an outfit like Higgins & Seiter were the type acutely conscious of fashion and would be mortified at the prospect of using a china a pattern that was ten years out of date or even five years out of date. As a result, these patterns came and went in short order and replacements are almost impossible to find.
