As a pioneering artist and co-founder of major modernist movements from the 1950s to 1960s, such as the Ton Fan Art Group and the Punto Movement, in Taiwan and Europe, Hisao Chin delved into Asian philosophies when incorporating elements of Western post-war avant-garde practices, seeking modern expression within Eastern spirituality. Actively fostering the ideology exchange between the East and West, Hsiao was recognized as one of the most influential figures of modern abstraction.

Gaining insight from Zen and Taoism, Hsiao’s signature style, abstract in forms and vibrant in colors, explores the harmonious balance between “finite and infinite,” “solid and void,” and “strength and weak,” to emphasize the dichotomous nature of the world. His utilization of color transcends the physical space on the canvas, extending to infinity with dynamic energies. His works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, M+ Museum in Hong Kong, Long Museum in Shanghai, etc.

Transforming the philosophical questions about humans and nature that one might never figure out the truth in a lifetime into abstract visual languages, this painting, “Meditazione Viola,” featured in the auction provides viewers great tranquility and inner peace. Violet purple dominates the canvas in beautifully curved shapes and lines, like ocean waves that refresh our minds for a deep, calm meditation. It is a delightful visual enjoyment to spend some time in Hsiao’s world of abstraction.
