Literature

Schilderijen en teekenwerk van Jacobus van Looy in het "Huis van Looy" te Haarlem. [Haarlem], Huis van Looy, [1934], p. 3

Provenance

Private collection, a wedding gift from the Van Gelder-Koolbergens, 1978; Collection Anton van Gelder, son of the artist, and Wilhelmina Koolbergen, Abcoude; by descent from Titia van Looy-van Gelder, wife of the artist, 1948

Notes

Although an unmistakable double talent, Van Looy had to work hard on his painting career. While he became one of the most popular writers of his time, shortly after his death the scales tilted the other way. The interest in his books quickly declined and the authentic quality of his paintings received the recognition he had hoped for during his lifetime. One of the most enchanting works by the artist are the characteristic flower paintings distinguished by the winding and wavy lines and rhythmically repeated arrangements. This work was exhibited at the Museum Het huis van Looy in the 1930s and 40s, and afterwards it was on long-term loan to the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem.
