Description

J. Clinton Shepherd (American, 1888 - 1975), American Indian, oil on canvas. 31 1/2" x 52". Signed lower right. From Askart.com: Joseph Clinton Shepherd was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1888. He became an illustrator in New York, and then the Director of the Norton School of Art in Palm Beach, Florida from 1941 to 1946. His specialty was painting in realist style western subjects and animals. Shepherd studied at the University of Missouri, the Kansas City School of Fine Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, and with Walter Ufer and Harvey Dunn. He was a member of the Palm Beach Art League, the National Sculpture Society and the Silvermine Art Guild. Shepherd's work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Norton Gallery, the Silvermine Artists Guild, the Miami Artist League, winning a prize in 1940, and the Palm Beach Artist League, winning a prize in 1941. Provenance: Estate of Harrison Eiteljorg (1903-1997), founder of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indianapolis.
