Notes

This unusual vase is signed JH Moreau, who is not a listed artist but was probably a member of the Moreau sculptor dynasty. The quality of the casting and modelling is exceptional and must have been produced by an accomplished sculptor. The inscription indicates that it was probably designed and made for a specific commission. The unusual neck of the vase resembles a canon and the strapwork ornamentation gives a quasi-military feel to the piece, perhaps indicating that it was made for an important military figure. Others have suggested that the neck resembles a chimney and might therefore indicate that it was made for an industrialist.
