Description: J. PURDEY & SONS A 12-BORE SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK NON-EJECTOR GUN, NO. 13091 30-inch chopper-lump Whitworth steel barrels with 2 1/2-inch chambers, about improved cylinder and 1/2 choke borings, mid extension, the frame, locks and top lever with fine bouquet and scroll engraving, 14-inch figured replacement stock, 6lb. 6oz., nitro re-proof, barrel wall thickness below the recommended minimum close to the bottom rib, in its brassbound oak and leather case S2 The maker confirms that the gun was built in 1888 for Major General Wynne. Major General Sir Arthur Singleton Wynne was born in 1846. He served in the second Anglo Afghan War and in 1885 was decorated for service in Sudan. He served in the second Boer War and was made Deputy Adjutant-General for the Natal Field Force in South Africa. He was given command of the 11th Infantry Brigade after the battle of Spion Kop. He himself was wounded during the battle of the Tugela Heights in 1900 and was given command of the Cape Colony district where he was mentioned in Dispatches. He went on to be Military Secretary and upon retirement became the Keeper of the Jewel House. He was Deputy Lieutenant of Westmoreland and died in 1936 aged 89.
