Notes

PROPERTY FROM A NEW YORK COLLECTION

We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, for confirming the attribution to Jan Weenix and for providing information relevant to the cataloguing of the painting.

Lodewina Schey was the eldest daughter of Gillis Schey, Vice-Admiral of Holland and West Friesland. Between 1692-1695, Jan Weenix was commissioned to paint the portraits of the Admiral and his children. The family portraits remained together until their sale by the Duke of Bylandt in 1964. At that time, The Admiral's portrait was bought by the Historisch Scheepvaarts Museum, Amsterdam. The portraits of Lodewina's older brother, Dirk, and youngest sister, Elisabeth, were bought by the Gemäldegalerie der Akademie, Vienna (inv. nos. 135 and 136).
