NOTES Juel, the son of a vicar, trained in Hamburg (then under Danish sovereignty) and at the Kunstakademi from 1765-1771. Many of his finest portraits stem from this period, when he was greatly influenced by his professor, Carl Gustaf Pilo, best known for his portraits of the Danish royal family. Indeed, one year after the present portrait was painted, Jens Juel was commissioned to paint his first royal portrait, Caroline Mathilde, wife of Christiaan VII. Juel went on to be appointed court painter in 1780.
