Item Overview

Description

Plaskett was born in New Westminster, BC in 1918. He initially studied history, and taught school for six years. In 1944, became interested in art. He studied at the Emily Carr College of Art & Design (now University) and the Banff School of Fine Arts where his teacher was A.Y. Jackson. In 1945, he joined the B. C. Society of Artists, and in 1946 he was awarded the first Emily Carr Scholarship for study in the U.S. by Lawren Harris and went to study at the San Francisco School of Art. From there he taught at the Winnipeg School of Art where he was made director (1947-1949). During those summers he studied in New York and once, with Hans Hoffmann in Provincetown. From 1949 to 1951 he studied with Fernand Léger. He studied at the Slade School, London (1951-1952) with a bursary awarded by the British Arts Council, and took etching and engraving with Stanley William Hayter, in Paris in 1953 with the aid of a Canadian Government Overseas Scholarship. He opened a studio there in 1957. With family in New Westminster and on Vancouver Island, Plaskett returned to Canada regularly, including a 1960 visit that saw an exhibition and talk at the Fine Arts Gallery at UBC and a one-man exhibition at New Design Gallery, and a 1967 Canada Council funded tour. In Paris, Plaskett, having renounced abstraction, painted still-lifes in oils and did pastels that Vancouver Sun art critic Michael Scott described as "romanticized impressionism". He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1991, and was made a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He was also a member of the Canadian Group of Painters. He died on 21 September 2014 at the age of 96.
