A violinist, as well as an artist, John Baptist Malchair held the position of leader of the band in the Music Room at Oxford from 1759 to 1792. He was very influential as a drawing master amongst the undergraduates, and his pupils included William Henry Barnard (see lot 156) and William Crotch (see lot 155).
