Description

They Twist and Turn and Call Themselves German Judges (At the Arsonist Trial in Leipzig) Gelatin silver print. circa 1960. 37 1/8 x 27 1/4 in. Framed. LITERATURE "AIZ" 12, Number 14, October 19, 1933, p. 691; "Kent," pp. 162-163; "John Heartfield," pp. 184-185 (for both the "AIZ" version and the original collage); "Leben und Werk," p. 66 (for a reproduction of the Reichstag Fire series postcard) and "John Heartfield Photomontages," p. 18 (for the back cover). This photomontage was used originally in a special issue of "AIZ" "Reichstagsbrandprozess/Gegenprozess" (Reichstag Fire trial/counterfeit) dedicated to the trial of the four men accused of arson in the fire that destroyed the Reichstag on February 27, 1933. Heartfield made use of the image of the twisted snakes not only in "AIZ" but reproduced it as a postcard along with three other images, commemorating the trial and on the back cover of a 1934 book about the trial "Dimitroff contra Goering.".
