As with his sculpture, the subject matter and medium of Beuys' drawings were often virtually intertwined. Although the appearance of the drawing was not of primary importance to Beuys, its colour or substance were likely to have some sort of relationship with its subject or meaning. The beautiful silhouette of Untitled was created from Iron Chloride, a chemical which is synonomous with energy, strength and life-giving qualities. By turns, strong in its solidity and fragile in its transparency, Its colour is also close to that of the soil of the earth. This is a consistent reference Beuys makes to his relationship with the country that surrounds him, the healing properties of the plants that grow within and the animals which inhabit nature.
