The present picture dates to the 1780's. Wright had recently returned from a tour of Italy, where he produced his famous pictures of Mount Vesuvius. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1781 and some of his finest portraits, as well as his Derbyshire landscapes date from this productive period.
