THE PROPERTY OF A GERMAN PRIVATE COLLECTOR
This painting displays Van Streek's artistic skills, especially evident in the differentiated textures of the heavy velvet drapery, the fragile porcelain, the sparkling silverware of the Nautilus cup, and the flower dusted bread roll.
Van Streek did not date his paintings, and he appears to have maintained a consistent style throughout his career. He relied on a restricted number of, mainly vertical, compositions, using the same or very similar props in many works.
There are several compositions by Van Streek that are very similar to this one, such as the one sold in these Rooms, 8 May 2007, lot 102. Another closely related work is in the Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal, Leiden (inv. no. 418).
