Item Overview

Figure Signed Y. Kazuki Oil on canvas 16.1/8 x 103/4in. (41 x 27.3cm.) NOTES Kazuki Yasuo was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture. He studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and graduated in 1936, having won awards for his paintings while still in school. Recruited into the military in 1943, he eventually became a prisoner-of-war in Siberia, an experience of hardship and deprivation that, paradoxically, provided a wealth of subject matter for him. Recognized for the power of his striking images by Umehara Ryuzaburo, Kazuki was encouraged to return to painting after the war. His work is included in the collections of the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art and the Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum. For paintings by Kazuki Yasuo sold in these Rooms see Contemporary Japanese Art from the Estate of Blanchette H. Rockefeller, April 27, 1997, lots 23 and 42.
