Description

This exceptional original illustration depicts marine or bird wildlife found in the Asian Pacific Islands. It was illustrated by Karl Walton Kenyon during is wartime deployment between 1941 and 1956 with watercolor, ink, or graphite on paper. Many of these were done by Kenyon from life of specimens he caught himself. On many of the figures he had signed and provided notes relating to locality, scale, species, and date.

Karl Walton Kenyon (1918-2007) was born on in La Jolla, California. He attended Pomona College for undergrad and received his master's degree from Cornell in 1941. He served as a naval aviator in the Pacific during World War II. He was discharged with honors after he was shot down in the Philippines and rescued at sea. He worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Seattle from 1949 to the 1970s. He was a noted expert on the sea otter through this time. He documented the ingestion of plastic in seabirds, and worked on conservation through his retirement.

The work is in very good to excellent condition. There is a ~ 1/4" strip of tape to verso edges. There may be a few minor imperfections to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.
