Notes

the beckford-hamilton copy. This was originally published in Rome in 1641, and the third edition was greatly expanded from the earlier editions. It covers all aspects of magnetism, from magnetism of the earth and objects in its strict modern sense to the magnetism of animals and music. As a Jesuit living in Rome, Kircher was able to make use of scientific observations made by Jesuit missionaries in their relations.
