Lot 373: KURT SCHMID-EHMEN NAZI EAGLE CREATOR ARCHIVE

Est: $5,000 USD - $10,000 USDSold:
Fairhill Auction LLCElkton, MD, USApril 12, 2022

Item Overview

Description

(1901-1968) German sculptor of monumental Nazi eagles which came to symbolize the Nazi party. He created numerous Nazi eagle monuments, most famously the eagle at the Reichskanzlei in Berlin, the eagle at the Nuremberg rally stadium, and his biggest piece, a nine-meter tall eagle unveiled at the German Pavillion at the 1937 World's Exhibition held in Paris. On offer is a plaster sculpture of a Nazi Reichs eagle clutching an oak leaf wreath with a static swastika. The eagle sculpture has a wooden bracket as bracing, some cracks have developed over time (see images), the sculpture measures 9.25 x 9.25 inches. Possibly a mock-up for a larger version to be installed at a building. This one-of-a-kind model is accompanied by a large archive of original photo negatives, an architectural blueprint of a stadium, many documents, pamphlets. The architectural drawing shows a large oval stadium, possibly for soccer, on tracing paper measuring 42.75 x 33 inches. This collection contains 59 original negatives, medium format and sheet film sized, of his work and process; three glass plate negatives, one is broken; 25 original photographic prints; and 38 documents once belonging to Schmid-Ehmen. The photos and negatives show the design and construction of several eagles in Schmid-Ehmen's studio, the sculpting of a female figure, presentation of one of his eagles, installation of one of the eagles on a building in Germany, and some reference photos of eagles from the zoo. The 38 documents include letters from his lawyer to sue other companies for plagiarism of the eagle, ration cards, two Christmas cards, letters to ask him to be featured in an art magazine, and eleven issues of the Reichs Guild for the Association of Sculptors and Stonemasons. Possibly the last collection of original relics documenting Schmid-Ehmen's work that is for sale. For viewing purposes a few negatives have been copy as positives, the archives contains many more negatives not shown here.

Absentee bids placed through any third-party proxy site, such as Invaluable.com, etc., are delivered to the auctioneer and the clerk when the lot is opened for bidding by the auctioneer and not before, hence these bids will not be considered as an early absentee bid by the auctioneer. 10. Bidders are advised that we are not selling frames or framing glass, and therefore the condition of the frame or the glass shall not be considered a reason for return. Shipping costs for framed items may vary greatly depending on the size and/or weight of the frame, and at times these charges may be more than the hammer plus buyer's premium. Customers may request us to remove autographs, artwork, etc. from its frame to reduce shipping charges. We will accommodate customers in that respect for an additional charge of $10.00 per framed item, please note such service will be undertaken at our sole discretion and only after full payment has been received. Fairhill Auction LLC will exercise care in removing items from frames, but this is done ENTIRELY at the risk of the buyer and the buyer fully indemnifies Fairhill Auction LLC for any damage that may occur as a result of any attempt by us to remove the item from a frame, mat, glass, etc.

11. Photographs of lots may have been adjusted for size, color, brightness, or contrast, for display purposes only. We do not guarantee the color or contrast of lots displayed online matching the sold items due to variances in external device color calibration.
