oil on canvas
44 x 34 cm

This portrait was painted during the summer of 1957 at Kintail in Scotland. Nicholas, who was studying for the priesthood at Kelham Theological College, undertook a summer job doing some gardening for a church of Scotland Minister at Kintail. Lillias Torrance Newton was also staying with the Minister prior to going to London in order to paint a portrait of the Queen. She was the first Canadian artist commissioned to do so. Whilst in Scotland she painted this portrait, somewhat to the concern of the Minister whose garden did not receive any attention whilst Nicholas sat for the portrait.
