More About this Item
Description
Autograph Letter Signed - (ALS) An autograph letter signed from Livingstone to Mr John Crookes, written on Livingstone's last visit to Britain, answering a query about a sailor, presumably from an earlier expedition. One page with integral blank, Hamilton, 6 September 1864. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, signed "Dr L" and postmarked 06/09/1864. Measures 182x115mm and is unframed. With expected mailing folds, light tonal transference from ink, otherwise very good condition. The letter appears to be unknown and unpublished. No letters to Crookes are recorded by Clendennen and Cunningham, although two other letters written on this day are known. Reads in full: 'I am sorry that I can give you no information about John Penny the sailor who left the Cape about 10 years ago. I never heard his name mentioned.'
